My work focuses on understanding the cycling of organic carbon in aquatic environments. Continuously increasing carbon flux from land to inland waters and ultimately to the sea is a major environmental concern, and factors regulating the fate of this carbon are still poorly understood. 

Recently, my research has elaborated the role of exchange processes between dissolved and particulate phases of organic carbon, particularly flocculation of riverine material in Baltic Sea estuaries.
