Sustainable Use of Natural and Dimension Stone

GTK’s service includes the identification of regional natural stone occurrences and the preparation of usability reports for the individual deposits. The goal of the service is to ensure the availability of natural and dimension stone.

The red rapakivi granite of Virolahti was often extracted right from the shores of the islands.

Key benefits

Comprehensive study of natural stone deposits

Our experts identify regional natural stone occurrences that have potential and determine the usability of individual deposits.

Sustainable use of natural stone

The use of leftover stone and locally produced natural stone reduces the amount of waste and emissions caused by the activities.

Expertise for studying natural stone deposits

GTK offers the most comprehensive range of services and methods for natural stone surveys in all of Finland, along with extensive competence in geology, mineralogy, and technical properties of rocks.

Sustainable production with natural stone

GTK’s services include exploring new natural stone occurrences, investigating the selected sites, and drawing up regional and target-specific reports. Our experts study the prospects of commissioning a new deposit by means of, for example, mappings, drillings, and geophysical measurements. The mineral composition of rock types is determined with microscope studies. In addition, we provide the natural stone industry with a service for developing further uses for leftover stone.

The goal of the service is to find consistent and uniform natural stone deposits that can be quarried and utilised.

Finnish natural stone is a world-renowned building material. The most commonly produced rock types are granite and soapstone. Different types of slate are also extracted to a lesser extent.

Natural stone, or dimension stone, means a rock type that is suitable for construction. This type of stone is extracted from bedrock in large pieces and then processed mechanically by, for example, sawing and polishing the stone into different end products.

These end products include items such as dimensioned stone blocks, gravestones, slabs and slabs for outdoor and indoor use, curbstones and setts. Moreover, natural stones are also used for interior design details, fireplaces, tabletops, decorative items, and environmental construction.

New Information Obtained about Natural Stone Used in Urban Constructions and Historical Quarries

The results of studies aiming to map old quarries for natural stone in Southeast Finland and revive the natural stone market have been completed. The three-year project provided much new information about historical natural stone quarries in Southeast Finland and urban constructions in which natural stone has been used in large volumes.
