GTK’s Geophysical Laboratory has versatile petrophysical laboratory equipment that meet even international standards, as well as skilled employees whose expertise is utilised by customers and partners alike.
Laboratory measurements provide information on the physical properties of bedrock and soil, also known as petrophysics. This data can be used in geophysical interpretation and modelling, as well as in various geological applications related to, for example, the study of mineralisation and geothermal properties of bedrock and to radiation measurements reflecting the state of the environment based on sediment formation.
In terms of the study of magnetic mineralogy, GTK has access to suitable devices for the accurate determination of susceptibility and remanent magnetisation. The magnitude and orientation of remanent magnetisation components of different ages can be determined by means of demagnetisation, and magnetic minerals can be separated by determining the susceptibility over a wide temperature range.
In addition to these laboratory measurements, density specifications are available as a self-service under computerised guidance in the drill core archive located in Loppi.
The laboratories are also equipped with a comprehensive range of equipment for processing samples, and a set of drilling and orientation equipment suitable for surface sampling in the terrain.
For more detailed information on the measurement methods, see: Geophysical Laboratory
The service package includes geophysical laboratory measurements of grab and drill core samples and interpretation of the results for the purposes of geophysical studies:
- Specification of density and magnetic properties
- Broad measurements of electrical resistivity and chargeability, both inductive and galvanic
- Magnetic mineralogy measurements
- Special measurements such as thermal measurements, seismic P-wave speed specifications, porosity studies, and determination of 137Cs concentration based on gamma radiation
- Measurements of the physical properties of sediment and soil samples.
Petrophysical methods, when selected well in advance, provide the best possible support for the interpretation and modelling of results.
