Groundwater Energy

Groundwater is a significant regional thermal energy source that can be utilised for heating and cooling buildings and entire regions. Our experts can identify the special features of an aquifer and calculate the available heating and cooling power and thermal storage efficiency, which enables the planning of a long-term, cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy system.

Key benefits

Reliable source of heating and cooling energy

Groundwater energy provides solution also for peak heating and cooling power utilisation which may be a challenge for other geothermal energy solutions.

Cost-efficient energy production

Utilising groundwater as an energy source is a cost-effective, renewable, and emission-free way to boost regional energy production.

Groundwater energy complements regional energy production

Groundwater is a local source of renewable energy that can meet the basic and peak heating or cooling demands. Our experts help to determine site specific hydrogeological and thermogeological circumstances, which enables the successful production of groundwater energy. Our service includes the following areas

  • studies on groundwater availability
  • calculations regarding the availability of groundwater energy
  • thermal impacts of groundwater energy utilisation
  • estimations of available power and energy production from groundwater
  • studies on the environmental impacts of groundwater energy utilisaton

Groundwater is a cost-effective source of renewable energy.

Potential of groundwater energy in Finland

GTK has studied the availability of heating power in the classified aquifers in Finland. Finland`s groundwater energy potential in the GTK map service (in Finnish)

Geological formations that has high water conductivity, such as eskers and the Salpausselkä end moraines, are particularly suitable for groundwater energy utilisation.

Urban Geothermal Energy and Positive Energy Buildings

In Kalasatama in Helsinki, technology and service solutions are combined in an energy-efficient residential building, illustrating their effectiveness in an urban environment. The goal is to develop the concept of a Positive Energy Building, integrating geothermal energy, heat pump technology, solar power and heat, and the HVAC system.
