GTK possesses more than 3.6 million metres of drill core samples that provide information on the Finnish bedrock. In addition, the archive contains thin sections, till geochemical samples, and rock samples from museums. Some of the drill core samples have already been converted into a digital format through hyperspectral scanning.
Studying these already drilled cores saves both time and money. Although the environmental footprint of drilling is small, it is still advisable to at least start with existing samples and, reduce the need for drilling in nature.
The locations and sampling depths of the cores can be found in the Mineral Deposits and Exploration map service.
Customers can study the drill cores and till samples independently or purchase GTK’s logging and sampling service. Data from previous analyses can also be purchased.
GTK’s archive comprises at least 50 0000 thin sections. Most of the samples have a section card indicating the rock type and the most important minerals. Customers can study the samples independently or purchase an analysis or interpretation as a service.
The thin sections can be used to review the occurrence of ore or indicator minerals. Such detailed information is useful, for example, when planning exploration in a completely new area. Moreover, GTK’s thin section laboratory produces new thin sections from customer’s own samples.
At GTK’s thin section laboratory, customers can obtain, for example, new thin sections and polished thin sections from their own samples or from material in the GTK archives. These can be created from rock samples as well as from crushed material.

GTK also has till samples and till geochemical samples from all over Finland. They can be used to find areas with mineral potential on a larger scale.

Hyperspectral imaging is a quick method that does not harm the samples, as it does not involve any direct contact. The imaging process supports the data obtained by means of drill core logging.
GTK has used hyperspectral imaging to scan parts of its archives. The locations of the scanned drill cores can be found in the Mineral Deposits and Exploration map service.
The customer can also scan their own or GTK’s archived drill cores at GTK’s facilities using an externally acquired hyperspectral scanner.
GTK’s geological sample archive is located in Loppi. If necessary, GTK can deliver samples to the GTK offices in Kuopio and Rovaniemi as an additional service subject to a fee.
The facilities in Loppi and Rovaniemi offer additional services such as specific gravity measurements, radiation measurements, and pXRF analyses with a portable measuring device.
The samples can also be processed into thin sections in Kuopio or subjected to various analyses, such as petrophysical or mineralogical studies, with the diverse laboratory equipment available in Espoo or at GTK Mintec in Outokumpu.
