Evaluation of Regional Geothermal Energy Potential
Geothermal energy is available all over Finland. However, the amount and usability of geothermal energy vary locally and regionally, which has a decisive impact on the design and implementation of geothermal energy systems. GTK offers comprehensive evaluation of regional geothermal energy potential, taking into account all geological factors affecting geothermal energy.

Analysing the regional potential of geothermal energy promotes the planning of energy production
Geothermal energy can be utilised all over Finland, but there is local and regional variation in terms of volume and usability. Knowledge of the regional factors affecting geothermal energy potential enables more efficient energy utilisation – precisely where it is most profitable in each region.
An evaluation of geothermal energy potential helps to identify the regional applications of geothermal energy in the production of low-carbon heating and cooling energy. Evaluations of geothermal energy potential are commissioned by, for example, municipalities and regions with the aim of providing information and promoting the wider utilisation of geothermal energy in the area. Evaluations can also be carried out for smaller areas, such as at the initiative of a regional real estate development company.
In-depth knowledge of the regional geothermal energy potential allows for more comprehensive use of low-carbon geothermal energy in the area.
Evaluations of regional geothermal energy potential analyse, for example, the amount, usability, and variation of heating and cooling energy within the earth – which are all dependant on geological factors – at the level of an individual building block, municipality or region. Our experts will carry out the evaluation based on the following areas.
- The geothermal energy potential can be presented as verbal qualitative estimates or calculated numerical values, such as MWh/year/borehole heat exchanger.
- Existing geoscientific data may be used in the evaluation, such as data related to the rock types in the area, temperatures of the ground, or the thickness of the soil cover. If necessary, more detailed local bedrock surveys and sampling may also be carried out.
- The service may include examining the regional constraints, legislation and permit practices related to the utilisation of geothermal energy and clarifying the significance of geothermal energy in regional energy production.
- The potential of geothermal energy can be calculated at different depths, which means that the regional amount and usability of so-called medium-deep and deep geothermal energy can also be investigated. In these solutions, energy is collected from the bedrock in different ways and, for example, the fractures of the bedrock affect the utilisation.
Existing geoscientific data
GTK uses and maintains Finland’s most comprehensive geoscientific datasets, which can also be utilised when evaluating the regional potential of geothermal energy.
Our experts consider all geological factors affecting geothermal energy, both in the soil and in the bedrock. Of the individual factors, the thermal conductivity of bedrock and temperature of the ground have the greatest impact on geothermal energy potential, but other factors also affect the amount and usability of geothermal energy.
Geothermal energy potential at different depths
GTK can determine the potential of geothermal energy at different depths according to the customer’s needs. For example, our experts can calculate the amount of deep geothermal energy available for use in district heating. In addition, GTK has developed new methods for calculating geothermal energy potential numerically, instead of mere verbal qualitative evaluations.
