Environmental Effects of Land Use and Construction on Soil and Water

The service determines the environmental effects of operations on the soil and watercourses, and the environmental responsibilities associated with the operations. Research data is needed for example in environmental impact assessments and permit processes to determine the allowed emissions.

Key benefits

Environmentally sustainable operations

The background surveys ensure that the planned operations are environmentally sustainable.

Research data required for environmental impact assessment and permit processes

Via the service, the customer can obtain the soil and groundwater surveys required for the environmental impact assessment and other permit processes.

Environmental impact risk management

Our experts assist customers in identifying the risks posed to the environment by their operations and any problem areas.

Service that enables sustainable operations

The service starts with determining the customer’s needs and a review of the site and the background data. Typically, the state of the environment is assessed before the start of land use or construction. Alternatively, the environmental impacts can be assessed during the operations. In both cases, the survey is based on both existing data and the collection of new samples.

As the end product, the customer receives a survey of the baseline and current state of the environment and an environmental impact assessment for the operations. The research report includes the measurement data, the analysis results, and recommendations on how to eliminate problem areas.

Making sure that watercourses and groundwater are clean is one of the key issues in terms of environmental impacts.

The aim of the service is to assist the customer in determining the environmental impacts of the operations and the responsibilities associated with them. Research data is required during the environmental impact assessment and permit processes for the following reasons:

  • Determination of permitted emissions
  • Planning of measures needed to reduce the environmental impacts
  • Determination of the pollutant load reference level
  • Identifying existing sources of pollution

Healthy environment is beneficial for society as a whole

The minimisation and recovery of waste is a key part of an environmental impact assessment. Minimising the environmental impacts in general and issues related to the recycling of side streams are also prerequisites for operations in accordance with a mining permit.

Europe-wide Effort to Improve Soil Health – Achieving New Objectives Demands Systematic Information about Soil

A clean environment is important both to human health and the well-being of ecosystems. According to an estimate, about 60 to 70 per cent of the soil in EU member states has deteriorated to some extent due to anthropogenic activities. New actions strive to reduce soil contamination and promote restoration.
