Till geochemistry survey samples
Regional till geochemistry survey samples | |
---|---|
Summary of dataset content: | The samples have been taken from unaltered till (horizon C) below the groundwater table at a depth of approximately 1.5–2 metres. The samples are combined field samples. The estimated coordinates for the sampling points saved in the dataset have been calculated from the coordinates of three to five subsamples. The subsamples can also be aggregate samples taken tongues of till. The original application for the dataset was ore exploration. Please note: The archived sample is the screened <0.06 mm powder, not the original field sample! |

Spatial data product related to the dataset: | Regional till geochemistry (Hakku) |
Analysis information for the dataset: | Analysis fractions <0.06 mm have been screened from the samples. The concentrations of soluble parts in aqua regia for approximately 25 chemical elements have been analysed from the samples. |

Targeting till geochemistry survey samples | |
---|---|
Summary of dataset content: | Targeting till geochemistry survey samples comprise soil samples collected by GTK along sampling lines in 1971–1983. Most of the samples are till, but also include sorted mineral soils, weathered bedrock and mixed intermediate forms containing both. In total, there are 385,000 samples, of which around 300,000 are still preserved in the archive. Both the fine fraction (P i.e. less than 0.06 mm) and the coarse fraction (K i.e. 0.06–0.25 mm) are saved. The samples were collected nationwide by 1:100,000 map sheets arranged in a discretionary order. The sample line network does not cover the whole area of Finland. |
Original application: | The objective of the geochemical survey was to map the prevalence of elements in the ground. |
Spatial data product related to the dataset: | Targeting till geochemistry (Hakku) |
Analysis information for the dataset: | Fractions of less than 0.06 mm were sieved from the samples, and the concentrations of 17 chemical elements were analysed with an emission quantometer. |
Volume: | In total, there are 385,000 samples, of which around 300,000 (75%). Availability varies according to area. |
Resolution (sample density): | The point density of soil sampling varies between 6–12 samples/km2. The line interval is 500–2000 metres and the point interval is 100–400 metres. The sample collection depth varies greatly, but, on average, it is 2 metres. |
Geographic coverage: | The samples cover selected areas of Northern Finland and the region between Lake Ladoga and the Bothnian Bay. |
Sampling years (time reference): | 1971-1983 |
Physical form and storage conditions for the samples: | Powder packed in a small plastic container; weight of fine fraction samples varies from a few grams to around 30 grams, and around 10–30 g for coarse fraction samples. |
Sample identification: | Observation code (year, observation number, depth) |

Detailed till geochemistry survey samples, GTK | |
---|---|
Summary of dataset content: | Samples indicating the geochemical properties of the soil and the variation of element concentrations therein have been collected in the Finnish territory since 1960s. The sample material is mostly till and weathered bedrock, but some samples also contain sorted soils, bedrock samples and boulder samples. The till samples have been sieved to obtain a fraction of less than 0.06 mm for analysis. Likewise, the weathered bedrock samples were sieved or milled to obtain a fraction of 0.06 mm. Some till samples were milled in their entirety without sieving in advance. The samples were extracted with aqua regia or nitric acid and the extract was analysed for multiple elements. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS and GAAS) and/or plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and a quantimeter were used for analysing the samples. |
Original application: | The material is used as support for site-specific surveys of natural resources, and for the needs of scientific research, environmental management and other needs of society. |
Spatial data product related to the dataset: | Detailed till geochemistry, GTK (Hakku) |
Analysis information for the dataset: | Analysis fractions of mainly <0.06 mm have been screened from the samples. The chemical elements analysed from the samples depend on the analysis method. |
Volume: | The total number of samples is 468,481, of which around 350,000 samples (app. 75%) remain in the archives. Availability varies according to area. |
Resolution (sample density): | variable; depending on the characteristics of the study and target, the data has been collected as points, lines or as grid sampling. |
Geographic coverage: | variable, local |

Detailed till geochemistry survey samples, OKU | |
---|---|
Summary of dataset content: | In the Outokumpu-GTK data transfer project, which was implemented during 2003–2007, approximately 500,000 detailed till samples were transferred to GTK. Before this, the material was in the custody of Outokumpu Mining Oy. The material was acquired in 1970–1998 for exploration purposes by Outokumpu Oy, Lapin Malmi Oy and Rautaruukki Oy. The material mostly contains till geochemistry samples, but the material from Rautaruukki Oy also contains bedrock geochemistry and stream sediment geochemistry samples. |
