Assessments on the Sustainable Use of Peatlands
With GTK’s service, the customer receives accurate information about the resources, the properties of the peatland and any constraints that should be taken into account during different measures. Research information on peatlands ensures cost-effective and carbon-wise operations.

From peatland surveys to resource-wise operations
The sustainable and resource-wise utilization of mires and peatlands is based on accurate and up-to-date information about the peat resources and the site.
A survey of the baseline and current state of the peatland and the peat resources determine the reference level and the factors affecting the start of operations, which may be connected to matters such as
- forestry
- utilization of resources
- after-use of the peat extraction site as a solar park or wind farm, in paludiculture or in the cultivation of e.g. Sphagnum moss
- protection
- restoration
The customer-specific surveys provide a solid knowledge base for planning resource-efficient operations. The service identifies the resources, the properties of the peatland and possible constraints for the operations.
Where necessary, data-based surveys and terrain surveys, sampling and analysis, greenhouse gas measurements and drone-borne ground-penetrating radar applications may be included in the service. The survey can also be combined with an assessment of the environmental risks of acid sulfate soils, for example.
Peat data promotes sustainable use of natural resources
Surveys on the sustainable use of peatlands are integrated into regional planning e.g., through restoration, which has an impact on catchment areas. Peatland surveys can also boost the preservation of soil carbon storage and enhance carbon sinks.
