Utilization of acid sulfate soils – SmartASS

Introduction

The goal of the project is to develop research methods for acidic sulfate soils from the perspective of identifying soil corrosion hazards and planning soil reuse. The project also investigates the possibilities of using circular economy materials from the Oulu region in the neutralization and stabilization of acid sulfate soils, promotes the utilization of excavated acidic sulfate soil materials in land construction, and produces new information on the corrosion risk caused by acidic sulfate soils and its reduction in construction, and updates the current corrosion research guidelines as necessary.

The aim of the project is:

  • Increase environmentally safe utilization of acidic sulfate soil materials and reduce their placement in dumping areas.
  • Develop methods (stabilization, neutralization) in construction operations on acidic sulfate soils to prevent the formation of acidity in the soil.
  • Increase the utilization of by-product fractions from local industrial plants in stabilization and neutralization.
  • Apply and develop research methods for acid sulfate soils to assess soil corrosion hazards and research soil reuse.
