TURKE – Sustainable After-Use on Peat Production Areas
- Project research area
- Geoenvironment
- Project duration
- 01.08.2023 - 31.12.2025
Introduction
Finland is committed to carbon neutrality by 2035. One key measure to reduce emissions is to at least halve the energy use of peat by 2030 in a regionally and socially fair manner. The goal of Central Ostrobothnia’s regional transition plan is to reduce emissions from peat energy use by 75% during the years 2019-2030.
In TURKE project, the suitability of the peat production areas of Central Ostrobothnia at the final production stage for various forms of after-use will be examined, the profitability of the alternatives will be evaluated, and the regional economic and environmental impacts of several value chains originating from the peat production areas will be investigated. On many sites peat extraction is ceased earlier leaving a thicker residual peat layer on site. One goal of investigating different after-use trajectories is to help landowners minimize emissions from former peat production areas and to find a suitable form of after-use for each area.
