Introduction
Permanent magnets containing rare earth elements (REE) play a key role in the green transition. These magnets are predominantly produced outside of Europe and in 2020, less than 1% of all magnets were recycled. MAGELLAN will take a holistic approach to increase the recycling of magnets, contributing to ensuring the green transition in Europe. The MAGELLAN project will collaborate directly with material scientists, designers, manufacturers, recyclers and end-users to engineer a value chain solution for Electric Vehicle Traction Motors. The project’s ultimate aim is to kickstart the creation of a new value chain for PM recycling and production in Europe. In MAGELLAN, GTK leads the work package dedicated to demonstrating the financial and environmental sustainability of the new value chains.
