Introduction

Eastern and Northern Finland constitute one of Europe’s key mining regions, and the industry, along with its service networks, plays a significant role in the local economy. The objectives of the European Union’s Green Deal program and recent changes in the geopolitical situation have underscored the critical importance of increasing the European Union’s raw material self-sufficiency. Eastern Finland and Lapland, as one of the EU’s most ore-potential regions, can address this challenge. However, this can only be achieved if intra- and inter-regional cooperation within the provinces and the industry is enhanced.

The project addresses the identified need to further develop collaboration in the mining sector in Eastern and Northern Finland and continues the dialogue aimed at mutual EU-level influence for these mining regions. The project is an adjunct project to the Development of the Extractive Industry in Central Ostrobothnia.
