Introduction
Biodiversea LIFE IP (2021–2029) is the largest collaborative project carried out in Finland to safeguard the diverse nature of the Baltic Sea. The main aim of the project is to enhance the protection of marine nature and promote the sustainable use of natural resources in the marine and coastal regions of Finland.
In the project, GTK will focus on geological mapping of the seabed around Åland. The marine geological surveys will produce essential information on, for example, geological diversity i.e., geodiversity of the seabed and the distribution of seabed sediments. The surveys will also provide background information for species modelling. The comprehensive mapping data will support and guide the planning and coordination of the user needs in different marine areas.
The Biodiversea LIFE-IP-project is coordinated by Metsähallitus. In addition to GTK, the project partners include Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG), Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), Ministry of the Environment, Natural Resources Institute (Luke), Turku University of Applied Sciences, Åbo Akademi University and Åland Provincial Government.
The project has received funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union. The material reflects the views by the authors, and the European Commission or the CINEA is not responsible for any use that may be made of the information it contains.
