Awe – Arctic Water Excellence
- Project research area
- Sustainable Water Resources Circular Economy of Minerals
- Project duration
- 01.01.2023 - 31.12.2025
Introduction
The goal of the AWE project is to contribute to the development of new technologies and their piloting and implementation, especially in water-intensive industry and the water supply sector in cooperation with research institutes, companies operating in the field and industrial facilities. The targets of the project’s development are utilization of digitalization for the development of environmental monitoring and water balance management of large industrial areas, such as mining areas, and the development of advanced recovery processes and separation technologies as part of water treatment, e.g. in order to utilize metals and nutrients of wastewater as raw materials. The AWE project is led by Savonia Amk. Other project partners are XAMK, KAMK, VTT, THL, LUT and the University of Oulu. Business partners of the AWE project include the following companies: Agnico Eagle Finland Oy, Yara Suomi Oy, AA Sakatti Mining Oy, Keliber Oy, Terrafame Oy, Operon Group Oy, Valmet Automation Oy, Nordfuel Oy, St1 Oy, Mikkelin Vesilaitos, Weeefiner Oy, BioSO4 Oy, Meoline Oy and 3AWater Ltd.
The project is divided into five work packages: TP 1: Project management, TP 2: Smart water management methods for industry, TP 3: Circular economy of municipal waters, TP 4: Measurement techniques, TP 5: Business knowledge on water and catalyzing international activities. GTK leads the work package 2. Mine water management and smart methods, where GTK’s part focuses especially on optimizing the monitoring of mine waters and enhancing the removal of nitrogen in cold conditions.
