Artificial Intelligence in Mineral Exploration – AIMEX

Project research area
Geoscience Information Solutions
Project duration
01.07.2023 - 31.12.2025

Introduction

The AIMEX project proposes to use machine learning to create mineral prospectivity maps that have direct application potential in the global mining industry. The consortium brings together research teams from the Geological Survey of Finland, University of Turku, and Finnish Environment Institute, providing a strong combination of expertise in mineral prospectivity mapping, machine learning, and sustainable development. The project will leverage unsupervised and supervised machine learning methods at various stages of the prospectivity mapping process, with the aim of creating a decision-making system for mineral exploration that incorporates mineral resource assessments, economic factors, natural conservation areas, and other land use constraints. This approach enables more responsible mineral exploration, incorporating environmental, social, and governance considerations in the mineral potential assessment process.
