My research area is, broadly, geomaterials in the circular economy. I use techniques such as x-ray computer tomographic (XCT) imaging to characterise the three-dimensional internal structure of rocks and other geomaterials. I then use that data for 3D printing new materials and objects, using recycled or waste-stream materials such as mine tailings (the powdered residue from ore processing) where possible. A concrete example of this is developing lower CO2 cements, concretes, and concrete alternative materials by partial replacement of the ingredients with mine tailings, and testing the 3D printability of these materials at lab and construction scales.
