Reports on Two Regions Published in the Battery Mineral Project
The battery mineral project started at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) in 2019 to assess mineral potential for the metals and minerals required in battery production in Finland. Investigations have focused on cobalt, lithium and flake graphite. The project has covered various study areas across Finland.
GTK published project reports on mineral potential investigations in the Kitee–Tohmajärvi region and Dragbacken in Kruunupyy on 26 May 2023. The investigations provided new information about the mineral potential of these regions, especially regarding lithium.
GTK often conducts surveys in areas that also attract mineral exploration companies. To ensure uninterrupted investigations and GTK’s impartiality, GTK has applied for a reservation or mineral exploration permit for certain areas in accordance with the Mining Act. GTK will submit a discontinuation notification to the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) regarding the Piilo reservation (Kitee) and the Dragbacken mineral exploration application on 15 June 2023 at 8 am.
The goal of GTK’s statutory operations is to create and maintain high-quality international-level geological information and expertise, and to produce innovation for society and the business sector. Through its activities, the research organisation promotes the competitiveness of business life and regions, and supports the planning and execution of societal policy. GTK is an impartial non-profit expert organisation that operates independently in relation to its customers.
