Inspiring work community and professional development – application period for the summer internships open from Feb 26 to March 15
Work in the field, software development, sample handling, legal services… Interesting and diverse internships for higher education students are once again open for application at the Geological Survey of Finland.
This summer, several higher education students will be able to work towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral future at the Geological Survey of Finland. GTK offers various internships from soil baseline mapping, geophysics and bench scale laboratory work to software development and legal services. Work is carried out both in the field and at GTK offices. There are a total of eight internship positions open.
“We offer our interns the opportunity to get to know the work of the research organisation, experts and research infrastructure. We invest in high-quality guidance, varied tasks and professional development, listening to the interests of the students”, says Riikka Mäki, Director of Human Resources at GTK. She continues:
“The internship provides valuable work experience as well as an opportunity to network and work with experts in the field. At the same time, we also receive important information about the students’ career plans and needs towards the employer.”
GTK systematically monitors the experiences and satisfaction of the interns. Feedback from previous years indicates that the internship is perceived as meaningful and professionally developing. According to the feedback, the internship brings new perspectives to studying and career plans, and for many, working at GTK has strengthened an understanding of what to focus on expertise-wise in the future. Overall, GTK receives excellent views from the interns.
“The feedback we receive from the interns makes us proud every year. According to feedback from 2023, our interns felt that they were warmly welcomed by the work community and received sufficient orientation and support for their work tasks. The number and quality of tasks were considered appropriate. This is the path we want to continue and develop further as an internship provider,” Mäki comments.
Successful training experiences are also reflected in the number of internship applications each year. Last year, GTK received a record 634 internship applications. Many previous interns also re-apply to GTK.
“We are looking forward to applications from higher education students from a wide range of backgrounds. We are excited about the coming summer and the new ideas it brings on both sides,” says Mäki.
