Funding Proposed for the Renewal of GTK Mintec’s Pilot Plant Is a Topical Investment in the Promotion of the Mineral Sector and Circular Economy
The budget proposal for 2025, presented by the Government on Tuesday 3 September, includes a proposal for a mandate of EUR 18 million for the implementation and commissioning of the new pilot plant at GTK Mintec, the Geological Survey of Finland. The total value of the investment has been estimated at EUR 55 million in 2025-2028.
“The investment in GTK Mintec’s new pilot plant will enable the production of the necessary research data for the production of raw materials for the mining and circular economy. This is highly topical and central to both Finland’s mineral strategy, which is under preparation and the EU’s strategic raw material sufficiency,” says Kimmo Tiilikainen, Director General of the Geological Survey of Finland.
GTK Mintec, located in Outokumpu, is one of the world’s leading research platforms for mineral processing and circular economy. GTK Mintec has become even more important with the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), which has entry into force.
GTK Mintec’s new laboratory and office facilities were opened earlier this year. The renewal of the pilot plant is a continuation of GTK Mintec’s determined development and complements the developing research infrastructure. GTK Mintec’s customers are companies all over the world, and it plays a key role in the Outokumpu Mining Hub and the North Karelian scientific community.
